In a Nutshell

A note from our CEO, Jonathan Petts, on how Upsolve got started.

One of the first people I helped file bankruptcy was a woman named Kisha.

She was overwhelmed by debt and couldn't afford the thousands of dollars many bankruptcy attorneys charge. Like millions of Americans, she needed a fresh start but couldn't afford the help required to get one.

At the time, I was a bankruptcy attorney in New York. In my spare time, I volunteered to help low-income New Yorkers file Chapter 7 bankruptcy for free.

With some guidance, Kisha successfully filed bankruptcy and erased debts she had no way of repaying.

About a year later, she reached out to me again.

She was back at work. Her credit had improved. She felt hopeful about her future.

She told me:

"If I hadn't found you, I'd still be trapped."

I never forgot those words.

They made me realize something important: Bankruptcy changes lives. But for too many people, it's out of reach because they can't afford help.

That's why my co-founders and I started Upsolve.

Together, we saw an opportunity to make a free chapter 7 bankruptcy filing service.

Today, Upsolve is the largest bankruptcy nonprofit in the United States, and more than 25,000 Americans have used Upsolve to erase over $1.1 billion in debt.

Our services are free thanks to support from the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) and charitable foundations including the Gates Foundation, Robin Hood Foundation, and AlleyCorp.

Our work has also been recognized by TIME Magazine, The Washington Post, and The New York Times.

If you're struggling with debt, we may be able to help.
